The Jacket
Some time ago, I tagged along with Tom on a business trip to Clearwater, Florida. As he spent the day in workshops learning all things packaging, I spent my time hanging at the pool, walking the beach and browsing the small gift shops. It was in one of the shops that I had a pivotal moment.
First, a little background:
Growing up I didn’t like to stick out…although I often did. I was the tallest, I was the skinniest, I was the smartest, AND I was always the new kid. So, as I moved into adulthood I tried to be bland. I was very conscientious on my appearance. My clothing was always comfortable and never flashy. My shoes were sensible not stylish. You get the idea.
By now, you are probably saying ….ummm, Kim yeah, so what? Well here is the thing, whenever I wore that jacket I met new people as it was a fantastic conversation starter. I instantly thought this would make a great name for a marketing company because it definitely made me stand out!
Just like that time in the store walking back and forth for 10 minutes I have played with this idea for 10 years! I finally launched Pink Flamingo Marketing in the Spring of 2019 and have developed a niche for independent financial planners and wealth management firms.

Back to the story. As I was walking through this cute little shop in Clearwater my eyes settled on a denim jacket. Sounds basic, right? EXCEPT it had pink flamingos embroidered on them! Yep! Two bright, obnoxious but absolutely adorable flamingos right there on the front. Not at all subtle. I walked past this jacket for more than 10 minutes until the clerk finally said, “Just buy it”. I told her I really wanted to but people in Ohio would laugh at me. In my head it was the inner dialogue that said “just blend in” don’t do anything to stand out! I love flamingos. I loved the jacket. I took a risk and bought the thing.
About Our Founder
Our founder Kim Polatas has worked in the small business and non-profit space for over 25 years. She received an MBA in Marketing from the University of Akron and began work soon after at a startup nonprofit organization.
As with any nonprofit, you wear many hats so she served on the PR committee, was the bookkeeper, board treasurer, lunch mom, substitute Spanish teacher, and sometimes janitor!
Eventually she was offered the opportunity to go work with a successful financial planning firm and learned the world of financial planning and compliance. That is where she honed her skill of digital marketing for the financial services industry.
Many independent financial planners and wealth advisors shy away from digital marketing because compliance can be frustrating and a hassle.
